I think I've now solved most of the conundrums, record gaps and errors for the SJAB orderlies who died in SA, were buried at sea or who became ill on the voyage home and died in England. Some SJAB men were specially enlisted as SJAB in the RAMC under Army Order 86/1901 but were not included in the SJAB SA medal roll. The date and place of death and specific causes have now been established for all the confirmed SJAB members except 114 Supernumerary Officer William PEGLEY who remains elusive. A few more memorials in SA & UK (some need images or better quality images) have been found and some of the missing graves identified by Beighton & de Villiers have now been located and images provided by the SA War Graves project. Some graves which are recorded as SJAB have been identified as Southampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps and I've written to the CWGC to see if the commemmoration record can be corrected. Full details here

A few matters remain unsolved:

PTE WILLIAMS

Recorded as initial W on the headstone and T on the casualty record, which also cites his number as 786 which clearly belongs to Pte William Ion of Kendal Division who also died on 13 July 1900.

Does anyone have access to the original sources: SAFF & 'In Memorium' etc to check there has not been a transcription error. I cant find any reports of a Pte Williams dying on 13 July 1900 other than the ancestry transcription and the Findagrave record. None of the SJAB men on the medal roll correlate with these details either.

Pte T BAKER. Does not correlate with the 'BAKERs' on the SJAB Medal roll and have been unable to find anything other than the detail on the SA memorial to help identify him.

Geo S SAUNDERS is commemotated on a memorial in Exeter Cathedral but I can find no record of him being in SA and he is not on the SJAB SA medal roll.

Can anyone discover any information to resolve these identification and connection to SJAB problems?

Saunders/Sanders found - Part of NFBU-AD 2nd contingent so no link to SJAB.He was 45 and died of heart disease not enterc as proposed as the probable cause

Cole-Mackintosh states: "Shaw, H. Number 654 or 658. He served in the Imperial Yeomanry Bearer Company. He appears to have returned to England after his first term of duty on 3 September 1900 and then went back again to South Africa. He died on board the Hospital Ship Dunera when she docked at Southampton sometime in 1902. His name is listed on the Imperial Yeomanry Hospital memorial in South Africa. Its reported that there are 8 names on the IYHC memorial Deelfontein I have the monument inscription on one side, Willmore & Sells on anotherr side, with Fitzhugo, Phillips & Barrett onthe third and Vasses, Harvey & Saunders on the remaining side - Is Shaw recorded on a different IY Hospital Memorial??

There is a 658 Pte H Shaw in the OSJJ medal register but no direct link to the H Shaw in the bearer company as no number recorded. I can't find the records used to reach this conclusion. Anyone able to help?

1461 Ordly F Smith joined the SAC as E2931 Cpl - the SA01/02 SAC medal roll shows him as deceased and he is also identified by his SJAB service number on the SAC QSA roll but I cant find a date, place or cause of death for him. His service in the SAC is recorded as 4/5/1901 to 5/3//1902 - so that could be his date of death. Any suggestions for records for SAC men?

119 Samuel H T Clarkson is commemorated on the Dudley Boer War Memorial as S H T Clarkson:

Just wondering how you know the S stood for Samuel? I can discover nothing about his pre-Boer War life.

Samuel reinstated - It was right in front of me - on the SJAB memorial destroyed in the London Blitz

His death registration is in the name of 119 H Clarkson too as is the newspaper report of his death - The illness lasted 45 days! So like many of that era he used his middle name for everyday use.

missing R on his grave marker - no initials

Medal register - S H T
