I'm posting photos of a memorial plaque and a roll of honour in the same post as it will allow for easy comparison of the two sets of names.

The plaque was being kept in a storeroom at St Giles' Church when I photographed it.

N-u-L Conservative Club, where this superb roll of honour was on display, has since moved premises.

Berenice,

These are brilliant - thank you.

David - could these put put on the site proper. I think they're very important and should be recorded properly.

All best wishes,

Justin

It is so sad that the plaque is relegated to a storeroom.
Nice pics Berenice, thanks for sharing.

There was talk that it might go to the local museum. I suppose that would be better although museums don't always display items they hold very sympathetically (e.g. Blackburn).

After a bit of editing, I've been able to transcribe all the names on the Conservative Club's Roll of Honour: -

The names of the following members of the
Newcastle Under Lyme Conservative Club
are entered on this Roll of Honour as a record
of their patriotism in having fought for their
Queen & Empire in the South African Campaign
of 1899-1900.

H. M. Webb...….Veterinary Lieutenant
Jas. M. Lund......Veterinary Lieutenant
D. McLaren...…..Sergt. Major...…6th Co. Imperial Yeo.
T. W. Hobling…..Trooper...…………."...…….."...…..."
W. Marshall...…...……………..……."...…….."...……"
Jno. Garner...…..Quarter Master..…."...…….."...……"
Saml. Baddeley...Trooper...……...25th Co. West Somerset IY
L. McCluskie…………"...…..…….56th Co. Bucks. IY
W. Machin...…………."...…...…….6th Co. Staffs. IY
C. D. Huxstep…...Corporal..……..2nd N. Staffs. Vol.

Sergeant Major D. McLaren would seem to be the only fatality on the above roll, having died of wounds at Bethlehem, on 21st March 1901.

Marshall, Garner, Baddeley, Machin, and Huxstep are all also named on the N-u-L Borough Roll of Honour.
