Came across this this morning. It's in what was then called High Street Congregational Chapel, in Lancaster (now Trinity United Reformed Church). When Lord Roberts came to Lancaster to open the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) chapel in Lancaster Priory he also visited High Street chapel to see this memorial.

In memory of
DORLINDA BESSIE HYLAND
a member of this Church.
She was a Lady Nurse
during the plague in India 1898-9
and belonged to the
Army Nursing Service Reserve
during the South African War 1900-2.
Her ancestors (the family of Jackson)
were among the founders
of this Chapel.
She died while serving
her Country at Bloemfontein
Feby 15th 1902, aged 31 years.

Berenice,

You seem to have the knack of finding some very interesting memorials. I wonder how many people have walked past that window and not stopped to read the plaque?

Many thanks for this.

Best wishes
David

Not many because it's up high by the gallery! ;) But that means that only those who go up to the gallery can read the plaque. I could see it from downstairs and went up to read the inscription.

I suppose 100 years ago the chapel attracted a large enough congregation that the gallery would be in use but this morning there were about 35 people in the congregation. I'd guess that the only time the congregation's big enough for the gallery to be used would be the Christmas Eve service.

You are doing an outstanding job tracking down obscure and not-so-obscure Boer War memorials in Britain. I find memorials to women particularly moving.

Many thanks
Brett

From the Lancaster Observer & Morecambe Chronicle, Friday 26th July 1901.

"Nursing Sister B. Hyland, of Lancaster, who has been at home on furlough for three weeks, has received orders to return to South Africa, and leaves Lancaster to-day for Southampton. She sails to-morrow for the Cape."
