Another one in Duke Street Cemetery, Southport. Died June 7th 1902, aged 21 years. Buried at Frankford Cemetery, S.A.
Died of wounds or illness?

His brother Thomas was killed in France in 1915.

Probably disease - medal roll just states "Dead".

Not in the official casualty rolls as he died after the end of the war.

Hi Berenice,

I'm originally from Southport; I know Duke Street cemetery but I think the only time I went in there was to look at the monument to the crew of the Southport lifeboat who perished along with the crew of the St Anne's lifeboat going out to the stricken "Mexico." The worst lifeboat disaster in Britain's history.
At that time, I had no interest in the ABW mostly due to the appalling mismanagement, but well spotted!
Incidentally, there could be a spelling mistake on the tombstone; it could be Frankfort, I dont know a Frankford in SA.

regards, Iain

I was looking at the lifeboat memorial yesterday. Very impressive.

I'm sure there were many misspellings back then because of South Africa being so far away. I'm actually surprised at how often some of the place names were spelt correctly on memorials and gravestones.

Perhaps back then it was spelt Frankfordt as in the name Brandt
