a plaque was sited in the Old Preston Hospital not demolished but the plaque is in the Preston SJAB HQ

I'll check Preston's roll of honour to see if he's mentioned on it. I know that there are several war memorial plaques at Preston SJAB and it's on my list of places to visit.

My pleasure, sadly enteric fever got him approx. 1 month before the end of the war.

My father was named after this man so he has a special place in my family tree. I have also got his war medals for the Boer war passed down to my father then to me and then will be passed on to my son.

Sadly I do not have any photos of him.

Did SJAB corps have group photos taken ? I would love to try to find a Preston one.

Alexp,

It is great that the medals are being passed down the generations. What wonderful lineage.

I'm sure there would have been pictures of the SJAB men. Just not sure where they are now :(

From the Lancaster Observer, of Friday, 28th December 1900.

DEATH OF A MORECAMBE AMBULANCE MAN

Widespread regret was occasioned at Morecambe on Sunday when it became known that another member of the Morecambe Ambulance Brigade, Private J. Errington, of Sun-street, had succumbed to enteric fever at Pietermaritzburg. The sad news was reported at the War Office on Saturday night, and Sunday's papers contained the announcement of his death. By a singular coincidence, there came by Sunday morning's post a letter written by Errington to his wife as he was about to leave South Africa for England. Deceased, who was thirty years of age, leaves a widow and three children to mourn his loss. He came to Morecambe some time ago from East Lancashire, and identified himself with the ambulance brigade, of which he was an active, willing, and respected member. He was accepted for service at the front, and left Morecambe in July last, along with Fred Siddle and H. Miller.

From the Morecambe & Heysham Times, of Wednesday, 26th December 1900.
