Charles James Weir was 25 at the time of the siege and worked as an accountant at the Standard Bank, Mafeking. He kept a diary of his experiences during the siege which was published in 1900.

He recounts everyday life in Mafeking, the shelling, trench duty in the Town Guard, the many rumours of relief, work at the bank, major events, his health, religious belief and the rations that kept the townspeople going.
