It has been a very long time since I have had the pleasure of rummaging through a little curio shop and discovering some hidden treasure.
The pricing in antique centres and collector emporiums seem to have skyrocketed and my haggling skills are a little rusty to say the least. As a matter of fact, I always have a little smile when I see the dealers on TV knocking off a substantial amount when a TV camera and a so called celebrity are present. However, my bargain buy was 15 Boer War magic lantern slides for £10...no haggling required, in my humble opinion a New Year bargain. Apologies for the presentation, I have attempted to photograph a few examples for your viewing.

Happy New Year to you all

Dave......
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Magical indeed! Always lifts the soul when you can find a bargain, whether at auction or in the dealer's lair!
I see you have the grim but classic Spion Kop slide.
Thanks for posting.
Cheers Steve

Now:
If any forummer has a collection of lantern slides and can recommend a good way to photograph them, I'd love to see a thread on lantern slides and lecture tours. I can contribute a couple of examples.
Anyone keen?
Rob

Hi Rob. I purchased a collection of several hundred magic lantern slides, which includes sizable numbers on various eclectic subjects. There are a significant number of Boer War slides. I have the complete set of chapters 1 -5 in their original boxes, (for which I have had a light box built to display them), and then another large number of colour slides loosely marked " The Transvaal war", but without any packaging or slide descriptions, ( apart from their original slide numbers). There are also a number of black and white slides, some of which are titled and some not. Are you familiar with a series that dealt specifically with the war in the Transvaal at all?
Regards
Neil.

Neil,
I’m ignorant on this subject, which I think is rather neglected and deserving of attention. I think the barrier to anyone making a catalogue of these is the difficulty in photographing or scanning them.
Neville has a collection of these, as do a few others.
If you can solve the issue of how to photograph them, then I think we’d be off to a flying start…
Rob
PS “The Transvaal War” is often a lazy alternative to “The Anglo Boer War”. One might think it referred to the 1881 war but that’s often not the case…
