While looking through some old postcards in my collection last night I remembered this one and though it might be of interest to fellow members of the forum.
At the time I had not joined this forum so asked for info on another forum and got some replies.
It seems to be a 79th Queens own Cameron Highlanders, this was deduced by the thoery there is only one Scottish Regiment that has a black Sporran with two long white tassels.
Also on close examination of the collar and sporran badge we came to the conclusion it was a Cameron Highlander.
Now here is the interesting part:
On the back of the card are studio markings, quite faint but readable.
"By special appointment to his excellency Sir Henry B Koch GCMG KCB
The Kimberley Photographic Studio

Sir Henry was also Governor of Cape Colony 1889-1895. Interestingly, there was a short-lived volunteer corps named the Kimberley Scots, which existed in 1890 and then amalgamated with the Kimberley Rifles. Perhaps the chap in the photo was one of their members?
Any of our expert members have any views on this or any info on the Kimberley Scots?
Anyway I think the photo is one of my favourites, shame I had forgotten about it

The Kimberley Scots only existed for a very short time, three years or so, from memory, they wore a very distinctive badge and Gordon tartan, this fellow has the badge ribbon on his glengarry, but, no badge! :(

Paul,

I haven't got it to hand but Tylden's 'Armed Forces of South Africa' should have more info, including on the uniform.
