David,
Thanks for the confirmation, I am thinking the small photographs may have been cut out from cigarette cards?

Paul :)

A very sad end to his career as you say.

Best wishes

Paul,

Does it look like the photo is on card? We will have to trawl those cigarette cards once again to see if we can find the same image?

In the picture, it looks like the medals have been pinned on rather than mounted. Can you identify the penultimate one which is hanging below the last medal (Khedive Sudan?)?

Regards
David

David,
The photo is quite faded so not too sure, I am sure I have seen the Kitchener one on a Ogdens card.

Paul :)

Guys
There is a very interesting book on "Fighting Mac" entitled "Death Before Dishonour - the True Story of Fighting Mac" (here we go again) ISBN 0 906391 30 X. It covers his career quite well and does some speculating on his demise. Not to spoil a good read for anyone; but I do sometimes wonder why such a formidable fighting soldier as Mac would go on leave and not carry his service revolver in his kit (they had to buy them themselves in those days) and then do himself in with a privately and presumably locally purchased .320" job. And then there was the funny thing about the funeral timing and the concrete sealing of the grave.
I concluded that "Fighting Mac" was an extremely competent soldier in his day (which was rapidly changing to another form of warfare) - and perhaps it is best left at that.
Perhaps someone can tell me the Sudanese equivalant of "Bayete"? I think it applies.
Regards to all
