I purchased this postcard from a market stall in Richmond N.Yorks yesterday.
The man who had the stall had a large collection of postcards and was quite an expert and when I expressed my interest in the ABW he found this one.
He was unsure as I am about the meaning of the card and the period.
My theory is the two land masses are Australia and Great Britian, the gentleman with the top hat, some sort of "John Bull" figure.
The other figure possibly an Austalian, don't recognise the uniform but hoping it might be from the ABW period.
The card was posted in Jedburgh Nov 1907 to an address in Melbourne, an intriguing item.
Can anyone offer any thoughts please?

Paul,

The Hands across the sea appear to have been a series of postcards many of them featuring ships. I cannot locate an index of them.

Looking at this postcard, I thought it was Land's End on the right and something on the left. I think it may be Ireland on the left and John Bull is standing at Haverfordwest (where the headland looks very similar to Cornwall). Haverfordwest is the closest to ireland from England.

Is that Fena on the land mass on the left?

Kind regards
David

David,

I had not thought of Ireland, I must of been mislead by the postcards Melbourne destination.
Yes I think it is Fena.
Any clues on the "soldier"

The soldier looks more like an Australian than an Irishman. He might be standing in New South Wales just north of Sydney. If this is indeed the case, it gives a whole new interpretation of Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics!

It sure does not look like any part of the New South Wales coastline I have driven along, flown over or looked at on a map. I would hazard a guess that the land mass on the left is supposed to represent Ireland. Many years ago I recall seeing a WW1 recruiting poster with a representation of a rather pallid Irish civvie on the LHS grasping the hand of a suntanned tommy on the RHS with a similar sentiment printed underneath.
I looked up "fena" and could not get a match.
