Hello All.

A very exciting pick up recently.

The CGHGSM of Sjt JA Aldred, Basutoland clasp.

I have only this medal, but what a group to try complete!

CGHGSM - Basutoland
QSA - Wepener, Wittebergen, CC, Tvl
KSA - 1901, 1902
Cape Colonial LS&GC

I don't suppose anyone out there has the other three medals ???

The reason for the post is a question on the naming.

The rank, name and unit look fine to me (I am no expert though), but the addition of the regimental number (No 336), and the dates (1880.81) at the end are very interesting. A personal touch perhaps?
What do other members think?

Hello Thomas,

I believe that the dates on his Cape medal are certainly a private addition.

Joseph Aldred enlisted into the CMR on the 8th October 1880 in England. He was pensioned in 1909 after 29 years service.

He didn't start on a good note as 1 month after joining up (5th November 1880) he was busted for being drunk on parade for which he served 7 days CB. He has a further couple of minor offences recored on his page with the last entry being dated 1st Feb 1898. He must have then worked very hard after all of that to have been awarded his LSGC medal.

His CGHGS medal, QSA, KSA and LSGC medal are confirmed on his page.

Hope you manage to find the missing medals as this would be a cracking group.

Regards
Adrian
