Grieve received both medals and the usual five clasps, certainly from my way of thinking, a convicted thief who then continues with the error of his ways by failing to keep his nose clean, clearly has little concern with authority.
I know this might sound silly, but, are you sure this man was your grandfather?

Sure as sure can be Frank, but you seem to have access to a lot more information than I do, would you like to share the origination of it with me.

I'm a little confused, in your first post, you implied that you have read his service papers?
The medal rolls in WO100 are very clear on Grieve and his entitlement.

I did read that he was sentenced to 56 days for theft, but the definition of theft in those days was pretty all encompassing, just losing a button from your tunic could be construed as theft.
Sorry to be such a pain but where can I access these records WO100? i am very new to this.

He has always been known in the family as the "mystery man" as when I started searching for more information about him we found out the although he was known as David Manderson Grieve a name I was also given, his birth name was David Grieve another thing that put us off the track was he celebrated his birthday on the 31 December and it took a long time to discover that he was born on the 13 December.

My own father in law while in the Gordon Highlanders served 3 months for "losing a prisoner"
(he allowed him to escape)

You certainly would not be tried by a district courts martial for loosing a button, the original folios from WO100 are at the NA Kew, almost all are available on line.
I noticed that this particular man gave his place of birth as Dundee which was why I asked the latter question.

Thanks for that Frank, the papers I have only say 56 days for theft, no other details, the Dundee birth on the army papers are what confused us for a long time as well as the middle name 'Manderson', on his birth certificate he took his mothers surname, there is no father listed and the suspicion is that in later years he found out his fathers name as all his children had the name 'Manderson' given to them.
I will have another look at the papers I have tonight when I get home.
