Hi all I am trying to find information on my grandfather's Boer war experiences, he was David Grieve and was in the 3rd Hussars joining them in 1891 for a seven year 'short service' being discharged into the reserve in 1898 for five years only to be called up again in 1900 and sent to SA I have his army discharge papers but there is nothing in them to indicate what action he might have seen.

Thanks for the welcome BereniceUK and QSAMIKE

My grandfather’s details are as follows.
Born 13 December 1870 in Kinross Scotland on 06 February 1891 he signed a short service attestation of seven years in the colours and five years in the reserve at Dundee Scotland into the 3rd Hussars

His name was David Grieve and his regimental number was 2846
In the unit information on ABW forum it says that the 3rd Hussars regiment arrived from India in December 1901 however my grandfather according to his service record was never in India but served all of his short service in the UK before going into the reserve.
When he was recalled to active service he was eventually sent to South Africa arriving 25.02.1900 this means he was in the country twenty two months before the main part of the regiment arrived.
He applied for and was given permission to reside in South Africa being discharged in Bloemfontein on 30 June 1902
He was entitled to the South African medal 1899-1902
That’s all the information I have from his service record apart from what you would expect such as being absent without leave.

Any help in filling in the gaps or even pointing me in the right direction would be welcome.

Much of his time in South Africa, I dare say almost all, was actually spent serving with at a Remount Depot, Number 1 in Johannesburg, rather than with his regiment, moreover, it was commonplace to then go on to serve in, what was, in effect, the South African Reserve, actually in South Africa, plenty of opportunities to be found there after the war, if you knew where to look.
A very interesting man who certainly was not too concerned with authority.

Thanks for that Frank, it would explain why he was there for so long and never had any bars along with his QSA.
I did a guick Google search after reading your post and discovered there was a remount depot underneath Linksfield Ridge which is coincidental as I live not far from there in Bedfordview.

Incidentally I would like to know why you came to the conclusion that he was not to concerned with authority as it seems to be a curse that runs through our family, his son, my father and I have both got that same attitude towards authority
