Hello and Happy Christmas. I have joined because my grandfather served in the Boer War, because I loved him when I was a small boy, and I wish to contribute to and learn from the site. Being 75 years old I suppose I represent a diminishing population of those who still have a personal recollection of someone who served in the war. I have his medals, and recollections handed down to me by my family.
I now wish to be advised on how to share this history, and to add to it from information held by others.

Hello CSJ
And a warm welcome to the forum.
If you can add your Grandfathers name and service number we may be able to add some information.
It would be nice if you could add a photo of his medals for us all to enjoy.
Hope you enjoy your time here and look forward to your future posts.

Cheers
Paul :)

Hello Paul
Thank you for kind response. My grandfather was Harry George Julius HEYDEMAN. He was a railway engineer based in Natal, and a freemason of the Durban Lodge. He may have joined the Cape Police, because I have a truncheon of his stamped with CP (a crown between the letters).
The medals are the QSA with clasps Natal, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith; and the medal with green, white, orange ribbon, whose name I dont know, with clasps South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902.
I regret I dont know how to attach pictures from this i-pad to accompany this message.
Regards, Steve Mardell.

Hello Steve,

That sounds a nice pair of medals, the other medal is the KSA (Kings South Africa) awarded with the two date clasps and very rarely with one.
This link might help with a little more information on the QSA

If your Grandfather was Cape Police, we have a member Adrian, his username is Capepolice.
I am sure he will be able to offer more info and he will be interested in the truncheon.
Good luck with your further research.

Cheers
Paul :)

Hello Steve,

I cannot find your Grandfather on my list of available attestation papers to the Cape Police. I have not as yet checked the QSA medal rolls however,I also think that the clasps mentioned on his QSA are incorrect. According to the regulations you cannot be awarded battle clasps and state clasps to the same region/province.

Furthermore, I would if he had served in the CP have expected to see a Cape Colony and perhaps an Orange Free State clasp.
