Hi,

My name is Ian, I am researching my great grand uncle as part of my Genealogy research. I have an image of him which has some handwritten text on the reverse that reads:-

"C Arthur Harris, Age 22, Gunner R.H.Artillery, now in pretoria, after the war is over returns to complete his time in India"

If you edit the image in photoshop and zoom in you can, in my opinion, quite clearly read the Letters RHA on his left epaulette. I tried to post the image but it wouldn't let me.

I am looking for any assistance in identifying his battery, what if any medals he received, the upside down stripe on his arm along with the crossed flags\pennants and his term of service.

I also have a written account from his Niece that reads:-

"Arthur forging his age got into the army as a drummer boy in S.African War. Later he was in the mounted cavalry."

I suspect that Aunty Del was mistaken about the Cavalry vs the Artillery as the picture supports the latter, but any help in finding more information on his military service would be appreciated.

Hello Ian,
If you are quite sure about his names and know his place and date of birth, it is quite an easy process to search surviving service papers in WO97, WO363 and WO364, the originals are at Kew and copies of almost all are available on line.
Regards Frank

Hello Ian,
And a warm welcome to the forum.
Maybe the image you are trying to post is too large?
Can only confirm Franks post, good luck with your further research.

Thank you both for your replies. The image was too big I hadn't realised the resolution I and scanned it in was very high.

Here it is in a smaller version.
