Gazzetteer [2828: 2859-2952] a town in Natal Colony (Estcourt district; KwaZulu-Natal), 28 km south of Colenso.
In the early stages of the war, the town was garrisoned by some 150 men of the Natal Royal Rifles and a squadron of the Imperial Light Horse. It was increased by the retirement of the Colenso garrison to Estcourt on 2 November 1899 and the arrival of the 1st The Border regiment from Pietermaritzburg*, the garrison being commanded by Brig-Gen J.W. Murray until 11 November when he was succeeded by Col C.J. Long, RHA, and on 15 November by Maj-Gen H.J.T. Hildyard. Armoured recconaissance trains were pushed northwards from Estcourt station towards Colenso*, including the train ambushed at Blaauwkrantz* on 15 November. By this time the garrison comprised some 800 mounted troops, 4,400 infantry and artillery. Attempting to outflank the British at Estcourt, the Boers were defeated at Brynbella Hill* or Willow Grange* and retired without threatening Estcourt. Thereafter, the town was an important staging post for troops involved in attempts to relieve the siege of Ladysmith*.
