Shoe box full of Boer war cigarette cards 9 years 2 months ago #25867

Good day,

My father in law passed away a while back and it was left to me to clear out his very dusty workshop. My wife is of Boer descent and is related to the Boer General Piet Retief.

I have come across a number of boer war related items amongst which is a shoe box full of cigarette cards which have been tied with string. They have a number of different manufacturer names on the back including Taddys, John Player & sons , Players, Will's, WD & HD WILLS Ltd, Lambert and Butlers, ACME Cigarette company and Ogdens.

I have attached a picture of the box of cards and feel it best that I don't handle them too much until I have received advice from those in the know. Please could you advise me on weather there is a market for these cards and how I would go about establishing their value.

Regards, Rob

Hello Rob,

And a warm welcome to the forum.
That looks like a nice collection you have inherited :)
I have a small collection of Taddy cards, its looks like you might have a set of Taddy's Boer War VC heroes.
Condition is critical with cigarette cards, this determines the value.
A full set of VC heroes in very good condition will go for about £400
You look like you have Taddy's Boer War leaders also, I have seen them sell on ebay in very good condition for about £10 each.
My advice to you would be firstly to have a look on ebay where you will find lots of sellers of c.cards.
This should give you an idea of value, although you will find you will only get what collectors are prepared to pay.
You will find the Ogdens are quite common and come up for sale quite often, not to sure about the others but they do sound later.
Good luck with your research and if you decide to show a few individual cards we might be able to help with the condition.

Cheers
Paul :)
