Hi Klerksdorp Historian,
I have recently purchased my Gr gr Uncle David Reuben Whitfield's BW medals and received in the package extracts from a publication called "Vicissitudes of a Transvaal dorp Klerksdorp" written by H.M. Guest in 1901. I'd like to have the entire publication. Do u know what I'm refering to, and have you ever come across such a booklet?

On a recent trip to Tasmania I purchased a book compiled by Andrew Shepherdson "Journeys of a Light Horseman" letters sent back to Australia by his Grandfather a cavalry soldier in the NSW MR describing his Boer war experiences in the Free State & western Transvaal, interesting!!
I look forward to hearing from you. Evyn.

Although I am not familiar with the particular publication you are referring to, I do have another publication by H.M. Guest, published a few years after the War. This work is titled "Voortrekker Dorp" (Pioneer Town) and is a general history of Klerksdorp: from its inception when the first Voortrekkers arrived here from the Cape Colony and settled on the banks of the Skoonspruit creek up to the early years of the 20th Century. H.M. Guest was a prominent businessman by the turn of the century and had several shops throughout the Klerksdorp area at the time. He did good business serving both the Boers (up to the second occupation of Klerksdorp by British forces in November 1901) and the British occupation forces thereafter. Two of his shop assistants were actually arrested by the Boers for collaboration with the enemy and found guilty of high treason by a military tribunal. One of them was executed by firing squad soon after the verdict.

Incidentally, I am including photos of the other two sides of the Ysterspruit monument (photos 2 & 3) as well as (by way a sample of what other Boer War graves we have in the Old Cemetery) a photo -photo 4- of a soldier killed the previous year at a battle at Hartbeesfontein in the Klerksdorp district. Those of you who've got the time might want to go through Mark's list (see post #1380 below)and compare it with the names on the monument. As Mark's list is very accurate, it might be interesting to see if there are not perhaps some names on the QSA roster that somehow got overlooked when the monument was inscribed.

Hi Mark. My (very clumsy) mistake. Sorry. I just had a look at the memorial again and have only now noticed that the other sides of the memorial are inscribed with the names of soldiers who were KIA in other battles throughout the whole War and not necessarily just Ysterspruit. So indeed you are right: there are no Ysterspruit names missing from the memorial.

Just a clarification: Battle of Ysterspruit (subject of the memorial) took place on 25 Feb 1902 near Klerksdorp in the Transvaal (modern day North West Province) ( ) while the Battle of Elandslaagte took place near Ladysmith in Natal on 19 Oct 1899 ( )

Does seem strange that "Elandslaagte" is listed as place of death. It might be an error or could possibly be the name of a farm in the area that just happens to share the same name of the location of the famous Oct 1899 battle in Natal. The date certainly corresponds with the action at Ysterspruit.
