Hi
My great grandfather served in the Boer War with the SWB mounted infantry.
I have his service records and am keen to learn more about the way he would have earned his various clasps and generally about his time in the war .
He joined up in 1889 and was recalled to serve in the war so i would also like to find out more about the earlier time of service.
so ...the big question is..is there any one out there that would or could help me...
many thanks
john

Welcome aboard, John. If you can post his name and if possible his regimental number I'll see if I can come up with anything on him.

This may be of some help as far as clasps go:

There's a bit on the SWB here:

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark
many thanks for the last post.
my great grandfather's details are...
3049 Philip Blake
he enlisted into the 1st btn. South Wales Borderers 25/11/1889
and served in Egypt, where he trained for the Mounted Infantry [cairo 1/10/94]
and had a short time in Gibralta before transferring to the reserve in 1896
he then got recalled and posted to the 2nd btn. 18/12/1899.for the duration of the Boer War.
He was awarded the Queen's S.A. with clasps for Paardeberg,Driefontein,Johannesburg and relief of Kimberly
also the King's S.A.
he also spent a bit of time in prison for sleeping at his post whilst on sentry.
what i am looking to get is more details on the M.I. company he served with and their role during the war ,absolutely anything rely that i can collate into a scrap book type scenario
i do know bits more but anything would be great
many thanks
in anticipation
john

Hello John

You asked this question on the Victorian War Forum:

www.victorianwars.com/viewtopic.php?f=17...85&hilit=3049#p22385

The regimental history covers the activities of the company with 15 Brigade 8 MI Rgt.

The information is out there. Did you manage to get hold of a copy of the regimental history?
