Just registered, looking for a John Hughes who served in second Boer War,have one photograph only, no medals to report! Have no idea of regiment served, would imagine a 'foot soldier' only as census records indicate occupations as general labourer. If photo of any use to site, have attached, someone else may have relatives on photograph also, rear of photograph just says South Africa but not present for 1901 census and family hearsay claims served in second Boer War and nothing else! John Hughes has a hat and arm in a sling!

Hi wanda, welcome aboard !
Unfortunately there seem to be 78 men by that name in the Queen's South Africa Medal (QSA) rolls. You mention the 1901 census. Could you tell us when and where he was born and if he had a second name. That might help narrow down possible regiments or help identify a man amongst the service records.

Cheers,

Mark

Thank you for welcome. John Hughes no second name on census/marriage records. Born Llanymynech, Montgomeryshire, 1859, on the borders of Wales/Shropshire. In 1881 census was in Huddersfield living with sister but back in Llanymynech married at 1897. Sorry I have no further info.

Wanda,

You can search for service papers using full names and DoB only on FindmyPast and Ancestry.

If you can't find him here then he may have been in the Imperial Yeomanry, their papers are not on-line but at the National Archives. There are various sites with lists of IY.

Of course, not every set of service papers have survived - this is especially true of those on FindmyPast and Ancestry.

Good luck.

OK thank you, the Imperial Yeomanry, off now to look and read about those then. Even if I do not find my man, I have learnt about the Anglo Boer war thanks to this site and replies received - thank you
