I've been photographing war memorials over the last few years, mostly in the Midlands. I mean 'war memorials' in quite a broad sense - I include rolls of honour and absolutely anything which commemorates those who have served in war.

Also, my grandfather served in South Africa and I'm hoping to learn more about his time there.

Welcome aboard, BereniceUK !
You may want to upload some of your photos commemorating men who served in the Boer War. If you give us your grandfather's details we might be able to come up with something on his service.

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks for the welcome. If someone could tell me the best place here for photos of war memorials I'll post some.

My grandfather's surname was Baynham so having looked at your database it's likely that he was George Baynham of the Lancashire Fusiliers; he lived in Chester and as far as I'm aware was born there too. I'll pop up to the Fusiliers museum in Bury to see if they can come up with any info.

Looking at the medal rolls I can just find two men by the name G.Baynham.

The first being the 5th Bn Lancashire Fusiliers man. 7034 Pte G Baynham with Queen's South Africa Medal (QSA) and clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State and South Africa 1901. It looks like SA 1902 clasp has been crossed out so not sure if that X is for issued or crossed off. It looks more crossed off to me.

The second man is from the 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment. 2800 Pte G Baynham. He received QSA with Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal clasps [note saying militia reservist: 4 Bn Cheshire Regt] and King's South Africa Medal (KSA) with SA 1901 & SA 1902 clasps. There is a note saying Militia Reservist: 4/Shropshire LI.

Cheers,

Mark

Many thanks, Mark. The Cheshire Regiment man would seem to be much more likely to be my grandfather; I have a vague memory of having seen his medals when he was still alive.

I'll still go ahead with my visit to the Lancashire Fusiliers museum though!
