Hello Everyone

I'm attempting to trace further information regarding my Great Grandfather that served in the Boer War as a Private with the Grahamstown Volunteers of the "First City Volunteers".

What does the Roll of the CGHGSM stand for ???

Also, I would be very interested to know which Medals he was entitled to.

Cheers for now from Canada.

Len:)

Hello Mike;
My Great Grandfather's name was; William Alexander Barnsley, living in Grahamstown.
I found a link that confirms he was a Private with the "First City Volunteers" ..... QSA Roll WO100 with the Unit of the Grahamstown Volunteers # 281

Question: Does this also confirm that he rec'd. the Queen's S.A. Medal (QSA) ???

Greatly Appreciated

Len

Hello Len!

I have been through the QSA and Supplementary rolls for the First City Grahamstown Volunteers and can't find your ggf. The First City roll is in WO100/248 and the Grahamstown Town Guard in WO100/281.

Can you tell me where your information came from please?

There are enrollment papers at the National Archives for the First City Vols, so it is possible, if he did serve that his papers may be available.

Best wishes
David

Hello David;

I rec'd. my information from the Anglo Boer War website .... as a newbie I'm still feeling my way through the Site.

My GGF name appeared on the "Search menu as Barnsley W.A. Private (absence of his Reg.'t. No.) CGHGSM (1) Basutoland Source: Roll of the CGHGSM First City Volunteers.

Upon checking the South African Units ..... the First City Vols. direct me to see the Unit of the Grahamstown Volunteers.... the Rt. Hand Column then indicates and refers to the QSA roll WO100 281 ????

Perhaps he was only entitled to the CGHGSM (1) and does not include the QSA ....... that is why I'm asking the question.

Thanks

Len,

Your ggf is certainly on the roll for the Cape of Good Hope General Service Medal while serving with the First City Volunteers. The clasp he earned, Basutoland was awarded for operations from the 13 September 1880 to 27 April 1881.

I have included recipients of thr CGHGSM on the site because many men went on to serve in the Boer War, perticularly from the later campaigns that this medal covered.

That said, it is more unusual to see men who served in Basutoland to then take park in the Boer War nearly 20 years later.

Given this and the fact that I can't find him on the Boer War medal rolls, I think it very unlikely he did serve in the Boer War.

Kind regards
David
