David, seems like we hit the post button at the same time.
Another possibility; he served under a different name. When I went through the L on a copy of the original roll I keep an eye open for any similar name.

This is kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing. While I was researching my wife's great uncle in the nominal roll for the 44th. Battalion CEF, I happened to see this John H. Lutes from here(Moncton)and I noticed his previous service in the KLH. This intrigued me, as it's a local connection, so I figured I would try to do some research.

Here's a link to the Kimberley [Lt] Horse attestation papers on the forum for the Boer War. I can't see him amongst them but you might be able to pick up something going through looking at next of kin.
