Anorak,

I am not sure where the Boer fallen were buried. At Talana, they were buried close to where they fell but there are no Boer graves at Elandslaagte. My guess would be that they were collected the next day and taken away for burial.

Oh dear, Uncle Paul seems to be a little bit, well, "green" perhaps he has fallen victim to the mindless half wits that seem to be in abundance at this juncture in time, never mind, the people in the photograph can be thankful that it is not faeces, if it were, I should imagine they would not be standing quite so close!

Hello David,
This is very clearly the result of a number of idiots who have absolutely failed to understand, or indeed, even come to terms with their own history, it's so important, simply because, it represents a particular counties evolution, I don't particularly like the way Oliver Cromwell behaved in Ireland, but, it is merely part of history, I was not there at that point in time, so I don't have any real issues with it, after all, I cannot change it, yes, I feel for all the poor folk that had to suffer so much, but, I have never felt the need to throw paint or excrement at statues or any other monuments for that matter.
Kind regards Frank

It is possible that the Boer dead from Elandslaagte were reinterred during the 1970's at the Boer memorial on Platrand (Caesar's Camp/Wagon Hill to the British) in Ladysmith. The consolidation of graves to a central memorial at many places in Natal reduced maintenance costs and vandalism.

Frank
Your civilised attitude to memorials and a country's heritage would be incomprehensible to the vandals who are a feature of South African society. There was once a faint hope that education would reduce the number of vandals, but the treatment of Rhodes' statue at the University of Cape Town dispelled this fantasy. There would be a lot fewer people in the UK keen to dispense 'foreign aid' to South Africa if they lived here for a while.

Regards
Brett
