This is my data:

There is no trace of Cordeaux in the medals rolls or IY service papers (WO128) - online, however he may have been a 3rd contingent soldier who arrived after the end of the war and therefore is unrecorded for a medal. I can't explain the lack of service papers - except that WO128 on-line at FindmyPast is not complete. But Kevin Asplin went thru' the papers at The National Archives in compiling his roll which I now own.

The reason for listing Cordeaux as IY is that he appears in a list starting with a Lieutenant (confirmed) IY and ending with twoTroopers (typical rank used for IY), then the memorial plaque starts an alphabetical list of Privates and one Sergeant. This arrangement suggests two different units, why the second list didn't start with the Sergeant I cannot say. This website maintains two of these men are casualties from the West Yorkshire Rgt - I can't find any proof yet.

Interestingly the newspaper report in the Yorkshire Post & Leeds Intelligencer 26-12-1904 on the unveiling doesn't mention any casualty apart from Lt Slater.

Jim - you've got some research to do on Cordeaux, have you located him on the 1901 census?

Regards
Meurig

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my query, Meurig, your comments were very useful.

I have carried out some research on the Cordeaux family. Arthur is first seen on the 1881 census living in Leeds as does the 1891 but there is no trace of him on the 1901 although the rest of the family are shown.

I have now found him on the 1911 census under a slightly different spelling 'Corduex' - this led me to finding his death registration which records that he died in 1948 aged 71. He married in 1906.

His brother served in the First World War in the Royal Army Service Corps and survived. Arthur would have been too old to serve.

Thanks again for your response - prompted by your comment on the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer - I will check the Pudsey & Stanningley News for the any other information. It has also spurred me on to looking at the South African War in more detail.

Best wishes

Jim
