As boys my brother and I would sift through a box of my Grandmother's keepsakes, among which was a badge of Nesbitt's Horse Regiment.
Gran told us that her father, Charles Lowther Painter served with the regiment, as did three of his cousins who were Pedlars. Both families being of 1820 settler stock. So I have been interested in that conflict ever since.
My query however, relates to Cronje's surrender at Paardeberg
I was sorting through a box of old photos which were my late mother's, two photos mounted on board depict the aforementioned surrender. My maternal grandfather, a Mac Gregor, maintained that his father was part of Lord Robert's staff on the day. I recognised one of the photos from Thomas Pakenham's "T he Boer War".
My grandfather was rather prone to "flights of fancy", so I would be most obliged if someone could tell me who were Robert's staff officers were or could point me in the right direction.

Many Thanks,
Jim.

Hello Jim

What was this Macgregor's first name?

Ordinary soldiers and civilians served on the Staff too, so he may not have been an officer.

I have one H McGregor who served as a civilian intelligence agent to the Highland Brigade - a unit in Roberts' Army.

Thanks

Hi Meurig,

Thanks for the reply, I believe his name was James Alexander MacGregor and that he was an officer.
I have a photo of him in boots, breeches, tunic and sam-brown at Robert's Heights during the Great War.

Regards,
Jim.
