Hello-puzzled about my grandfather Horace Littler He gave me his Bible when I was much younger and he had written on the inside cover about the "terrible" battle with the Boers: please read on. He was originally a blacksmith and then worked on the railways-engineer. Born on18/9/1875 in Marston Cheshire and later moved to Prestwich Manchester. and died 15/12/1961. He was not on the 1901 census -probably in 2nd Boer War. Bible writing:-14/9/1899 Mounted Infantry Hill. 6/1/1900 -Great fight with Boers.??? hill Caesars??? hurt in mountain????. I prayed ?????thanking him for protecting me during such a terrible battle. I got soaked to the skin which has brought on rheumatism I trust I will soon be fit again.(???-bits I can't read) Anyone ideas at all please?? I cannot trace him anywhere in the Boer War nor the Manchester's. Could he have been non-military personnel with the horses maybe??

Hi,
The only H Littler I can find on Ancestry in the medal rolls was a corporal in the Cheshire Regiment who died in April 1900. Obviously not your man. However, there are a number of other Littlers ishown in the Cheshire Regiment , which may be relevant given where he came from.Did he have any other names apart from Horace? Haven't checked where the Regiment served during the war.

The 2nd Cheshires served at Jacobsdal, Karee Siding, Vet River, Zand River and Doornkop. All of that leading up to the occupation of Johannesburg. The other fragmentary references would appear to indicate that your GF was in Ladysmith siege. An entirely different front. "Mounted Infantry Hill" was a feature of the Ladysmith inner ring of hills; "6/1/00 Great fight with Boers .... hill Caesars" would be about the Boer attack on Caesars Camp and Wagon Hill on 6/1/00. Patrick, it might be an idea to check the rolls of the other regiments cooped up in Ladysmith.
Good luck
IL.

I think unless he actually told you he served in the Army during the Anglo Boer War, it is very unwise to merely assume that he did, simply because of a missing folio in the RG series and a bible, in fact, the first thing I would ask would be where did he get the bible from?

Thanks. he was given the Bible by his father and then onto me and it was his writing in the there-he lived with us for some while up until he died so I saw this writing a lot and he does not appear on the 1901 census anywhere that I can find.
