My grandfather was James Spencer Orr. He fought in the Boer war from the age of 17. Initially he was with the Brabant horse before joining the 82nd Company- 2nd Sharpshooters of the Imperial yeomanry. He was apparently wounded in a skirmish at Zand river on June 29th 1900.
I have his two South African medals one from Queen Victoria with the bars- Wittebergen, Transvaal,Wepner,Cape Colony and a medal from Edward VII with the bars South Africa 1901 & 1902. I also have his photograph album which consists mailnly of professional pictures he bought which depict the Boers fighting and their various generals.
Would like to know more details on his injuries at Zand river. On one report he apparenlty came home on a hospital ship, but I have a letter to his mother where he is complaining they are coming home on a coal ship which had been converted to carry horses.
Any information welcome.
