I have been researching my family history for many years now but, have not found the last resting place of my Great Uncle who died in St Roberts Barracks in Quetta aged 16. His name was Timothy Montague and, he served with the 1st Lancs Reg in the Boer war. Any help would be appreciated about how to find his last resting place. Thank you in advance.

Hi,

A few comments. He must have been very young if he served in the Boer War and then died in India at 16. There are a few men named T Montague on the medal rolls, but none from a Lancashire Regiment. The cap badge in the photo may be that of the East Lancashire Regiment. I'm no expert on uniforms but the one in the photo looks to me to be of a later period than the Boer War. Maybe another member can comment on this?

Sorry not to be more helpful. Do you have any other information?

Patrick

Patrick is correct; the uniform is Service Dress - which was introduced post Boer War for the British army and in use through WW1 and after.

Thank you for your help Patrick...this case is one of the oddest in my searches through my family tree as, I have a service number 3282472 and description 'Boy Soldier' which, belongs to the 1st East Lancs but, he apparently died in India although no date was given in the family bible except of the location. Once again a big thanks.

IL , thank you, I have checked through WW1 records (including the 'dawn' records ) but have not found anything relating to him so, still stuck in a period of pre WW1 and before 1904 where 1st East Lancs were in Quetta. His brothers ( my Grandfather and, bro) were in the Navy. The other problem is all family used middle name except in Tims place so, have major headaches. Thank you for your help once more.
Kind regards

Laurie
