I am researching a WW1 casualty from Berkshire called Francis Henry Jones.

He served during the Boer War with the RAMC and has several entries ( as a private) for the QSAM and one for the KSAM. However a short obituary printed in the Newbury paper states: "Sergt-Major Francis Henry Jones, whose death is announced today, joined the Army when he was 16 years of age [1897]. He was in the RAMC, and had served through the Boer War, in respect of which he won the Queen Victoria Medal for gallant conduct in bringing in wounded."

I can find no gallantry medal called the Queen Victoria Medal - nor can I find any service records for Francis - any ideas?

Hi,

The closest medal would probably be The Distinguished Conduct Medal. There were no other real options for gallantry or leadership for non-officers at the time.

There were however no Jones' in the RAMC awarded the DCM for the Boer War.

The closest to your name is:
1192 F Jones Grenadier Guards, or 338 F Jones Military Foot Police, or 3469 JH Jones N Staford Regt if the F was transcribed as a J.

The obituary may be referring to his Queens medal instead.

Good luck
Ryan
