Hello from America! I am attempting to locate information on my uncle-John Jackson. He was born in 1861 in Ballybay, County Monaghan. He died in the Boer War, however, I do not know where or when. How can I locate this information. I am new at looking into the Boer War.
Are there any extensive records of those killed anywhere that were from Ireland? Thank you very much!

Hello and welcome to the forum
I had a quick count of the "Jacksons" with "J" in the forename(s) listed in the Palmer casualty roll - and ended up with twenty-six. Can you give us some more information? Like, the unit or place of wounding/death? I don't know of a specifically Irish casualty list - also bear in mind that your "John Jackson" need not necessarily have served in an Irish Regiment/unit.
Regards
IL.

Thank you, but I have given all the information that I know. All is know is his birthplace, birth dates, parents, and that he died in the Boer War. I see that it looks like the Irish are listed as British, since other countries are listed. Not sure how to figure out which one might be hi.
Thank you!

Thanks. I found a list and am going through each person and seeing what country they served from, if they died, date and service number. Hopefully, that will narrow the search a little. I have hoped to find something from Ballybay, County Monaghan, with reference to him, but have come up short thus far. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Joanne

Hello Joanne

The only place that adds first name to the casualties is the data I created for The Register which is also on FindmyPast (referenced by Mike).

11 men named "J Jackson" died during the war, three I know for definite were called "John":

Pte 587 John, Railway Pioneer Regiment
Sgt-Trumpeter 67078 John George, Royal Field Artillery
Pte 5544 John T, Lancashire Fusiliers

Finding out where the dead came from is difficult as service papers for men in the British Army were usually destroyed, check FindmyPast though as some survive. For colonial units (like Railway Pioneer Regiment) they have attestation that survive, some are on this site, otherwise they are in the National Archives in London. But, the biographical information can be sparse, or useless for your purpose.

I also connect names from war memorials to the casualties, I don't have a "J Jackson" on an Irish war memorial; could he have lived outside Ireland before enlisting?

What is the list you found with the country shown?

Good luck with your search.
