Hello Meurig,
Thank you for the information. I have never seen a country identified on any list. I know he was forn in Ballybay, County Monaghan in 1861 and the reference was either in the church record according to my mother who saw it OR her grandmother told her, as John was her grandmother's brother. No, he lived in Ireland when he enlisted. Can you tell me if that was common for someone to do at his age? Was there a financial benefit to doing it?

There is an Irish Memorial statue in Enniskillen-6th Inniskilling Dragoons that lists two Jacksons, but neither of these appears to be my guy!

I have looked on FindmyPast and thank you for creating that list. I will now see if any of the records have survived.

Thank you so much!
Joanne

Hello Joanne

I only asked about where he lived on enlistment as that may indicate that he could be found on a memorial there and not necessarily in Ireland.

Good luck with the search, keep us posted.
