Hello, can anyone direct me to a site where I can find out more about my great uncle William Stewart who served with these two units? He seems to have died by 1911 by letters in our hands but we can't find where. He joined Rimingtons Guides in November 1899 and was discharged as a Trooper in Capetown on 26 January 1901. He then seems to have joined Damant Horse and the discharge certificate says he was discharged as a Sergeant in December 1901 after having served 247 days. I believe he may have returned home to Scotland at some point, but not having found a death for him there, wondering how to track down a death in Africa possibly. Otherwise anything on his time served in these units would be helpful. I did find his name on the nominal roll 22 April 1901 and at that point he is a sergeant.
Thank you

I had a look on my copy of the medal roll for Damant's Horse (formerly known as Rimington's Guides) and "Stewart, Wm," is shown as entitled to a great set of clasps on his QSA medal; Belmont, Modder River, Paardeburg, Dreifontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen and Relief of Kimberley. The QSA roll comments that he "reenlisted". A further notation is rather hard to read; but appears to say: "issued 22/2 -or 3/ 11 to Sister Ann Stewart at an address I simply cannot read. The roll for the King's Clasps for Damant's says that he was additionally entitled to the clasp South Africa 1901 - nut NOT to the Kings South Africa medal. His number on the Kings claps roll is 32855 and rank is Sgt.
Rimington's Guides were a crack unit and much employed during the Relief of Kimberley and after.
If you wish to read more about the exploits of Rimington's lads, the book "The Colonials in South Africa" by Stirling gives great coverage. Another source is "With Rimington" by L.March Phillips. That one was later published under the title :" A Tiger on Horseback". Should you discover more about your GU, I am certain that members of this forum would be interested to hear of it.
I regret that I cannot assist re deceased persons in South Africa. Other forum members may be able to assist there. It is possible that an enlistment form for your GU might exist in the UK National Archives.
Good luck
IL.

A brief look at WO127 suggests Stewart served with the rank of sergeant, number 32855, from the 22nd of April until either the 19th or 26th of December 1901, his medal and clasps appear to have been sent to his sister at number 3 Commerce Street Lossiemouth, up on the Moray Firth in North Britain, as it was still known, on the 22nd of March 1911, but, quite frankly, the obvious thing to do now is to take a very careful look in both WO126/145-163 and WO126/35.38 at Kew, one certainly would hope his original paper will have survived.
Rimmingtons and subsequently, Damants, were really superb, they had been raised on the 12th of October 1899 and were, from inception a magnificent founder corps within the SAMIF to see service on the Western Front.
