Thank you for the information. (We assumed that he'd been in continuous service). Here are some photographs of Ted.

the first two photographs are of Ted in his uniform. I'm sure that people on this forum know a lot more than I do about the uniforms, (I know nothing).
The third is of Ted in Civilian dress, I thought I'd include it as it certainly shows how to sit a horse like a cavalryman. Any comments r insights on the photo's would be welcome.

From family stories, and as indicated in other photos I have, Ted was a gentleman who was popular with his relatives despite looking like a bit of a bruiser.

After service, he became a reasonably successful publican.

My great grandfather Frederick James Brothers, born 1862, died 1933. He enlisted aged 18 in 1880, having previously been in the the Bedfordshire Militia, rising to Colour sergeant in the 2nd East Surreys. He retired from the army aged 44. Like many soldiers today he found it difficult to adjust to civilian life. He bought a pub "The Falcon" in Royston, but it went bust, and he ended up running a newspaper and information booth outside the hospital in Kingston upon Thames
Photographs:
1, My great grandad at a field kitchen in S. Africa.
2, A portrait of Frederick in his 2nd East Surrey uniform.
3,Another portrait
4, A scan of the fly cover of the Book of common prayer given to my g. grandad by the vicar of Chertsey.
5, A photograph I took of the East Surreys insignia which I came across by accident in Guildford cathedral. Frederick's son, and a grandson were also in the E. Surreys.

Any comments or insights on the photo's would be welcome.

Thank you for persisting with posting the photographs. It was well worth the wait! You are very fortunate to have these relics of an ancestor. Often such photographs end up out of context and the people and places depicted become nameless.
Regards
Brett
