Good day. I am coming to this forum from the "genealogy angle. I am interested in finding out about the military history of my family. I have two relatives who served in the 2nd Boer War. My Great Great uncle Edward (Ted) Dungate was in the 3rd Dragoon Guards. I discovered that he was in S Africa when I found him in a list of those awarded the "QSA". I have two photographs of Ted in uniform, and one of him astride a horse in civilian clothes. you can tell that he was a cavalryman from his stance.

My great grandfather Frederick James Brothers was a professional soldier starting in the militia (Bedfordshire Light Infantry), and eventually becoming RSM in the 2nd East Surrey regiment. He was a "Bisley marksman", and became an instructor for the East Surreys.. I have a Book of Common Prayer presented to him: "In memory of the sending out of 12 volunteers of the H. Company (Chertsey) trained by him for the war in South Africa with best wishes from Edward R. Parr, vicar of Chertsey, January 19th 1900, Psalm XXV 6, Psalm CLXIV 1". (I haven't checked up on the psalms yet).

I have a photo of my Great grandfather in South Africa apparently making a fry-up at a field kitchen with an African man in attendance. I have several portrait photo's of him in uniform. Apart from my own evidence, I've not yet found anything about him relating to this war, though I believe that the East Surreys saw action. I am obviously interested in anything specific about my relatives, but also about the respective regiments actions in S.Africa. In this respect, I'm sure that there is plenty of info to digest on this site. In due course I can upload the photo's if they would be of interest, or you can view the field kitchen photo, and a portrait of Ted in his cavalry uniform on my IG account RIVERSMOON_ANCESTORS.

Cheers, Kevin

Although I cannot help with information on your ancestors, I think posting your pictures on this forum would be most welcome.

Hi Brett, I'm having difficulty uploading the photo's. I get a message that the file size is exceeded. I have reduced the size/ resolution accordingly to no avail. I haven't found anywhere on the site that specifies max size, and I'm not sure if the problem is individual file siize, or that I'm trying to post multiple photos in one go. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks, Kevin

Sorry, I cannot help. I am a computer-phobe and do everything on these machines in a rote fashion. Hopefully, one of the Moderators will come forward to give you the correct advice.

Edward Dungate, an eighteen year old labourer from Reigate, joined the Army, the famous "Old Canaries" on the 8th of July 1890 in London, recalled to the Colours for service because of the Anglo Boer War on the 20th of December 1899, he served in South Africa with the regiment from the 21st of January 1901 until the 23rd of June the following year, before being discharged on the 7th of July.

The site likes pics of less than 1000x1000 pixs . Early on, I did not know how to do it and I got all sorts of odd messages! I don't know your process; however, my SONY uses PMB and once it is on there and reduced to a size I like (medal groups about 400H x 500H or so), click on Attachments Add File and then the identifier comes up and the Submit. On it goes. Once you get it, it really is quite easy.
I really hope my comment helps! ;)
Regards
IL.
