Hi all. Not at all sure if this is the place to ask questions but here goes.
My name is Colin Johns and I am researching my grandfather Samuel Johns. He served in the 1st Bat York and Lancashire Regiment between 1894 and 1910. I know he was wounded twice at Spion Cop on 20th January 1900 and I know he married my grandmother Lillian Cook in Colchester (her hometown) during August of the same year. Since I have been informed that his regiment have never been stationed in Colchester I am curious to know how (and when) they may have met. I wonder if his injuries were severe enough for him to be shipped back to the UK and onto Colchester Military Hospital. Are there any records of such movement? I am also curious about their life after getting married. He remained in the same regiment until his discharge in 1910 so would it have been normal for her to have followed him and lived wherever he was stationed. I know the house in Colchester where they lived and had four children, my father among them. Samuel Johns re-enlisted in 1916 and served in the 3rd Bat York and Lancashire regiment and he died of a heart attack in 1914 whilst stationed at Cocken Hall in Durham. He is buried in Little Lumley (Christ Church) churchyard not far from where Cocken Hall was. Again, was it normal for this to happen rather than taking his body back to Colchester where his wife and children were. Sorry that's three questions there now so I wont ask any more (for now anyway).

Hello Colin

Samuel's service papers are on FindmyPast.

He was wounded at Venter's Spruit not Spion Kop.

In August 1900 his papers show that he was with the details York & Lancs regt in the UK - I would expect this to be at their "home" barracks which I believe were in Sheffield. His papers do not include a medical history sheet which is unfortunate.

The papers also show that he was transferred to the Army Reserve in August 1902 - so from that date he was a civilian free to live anywhere he liked in the UK.
