Hi David, that's a great help, thank you. Do you think it's reasonable to assume that they could be the same person? It's just that I have him listed as a boarder at the family farm on the 1901 Census. Where they given leave?

Sam,

I did think that too but there are two entries for J Dawsons on the KLH roll:

Hmnn...so it's a case of which one (I can't quite read the dates)? The family notes say Trooper in Remington's guides and the Kimberley Light Horse. Most confusing. I really appreciate your time and help David.

Sam,

Of the two, 214 Tpr Dawson looks more promising.

The notes sat the Defence of Kimberley clasp was earned whilst service in the Kimberley Town Guard and that OFS and Transvaal from Damant's Horse/Rimmington's Guides.

He was discharged 30 Apr 1900 from the KLH.

There is a date of 23 Jan 1907 on the roll which may have been when his KLH and DH service was connected on the rolls,

I will check the DH rolls.

Sam,

Damant's Horse QSA roll (WO100/244p17) lists Cpl Dawson and the clasps for DoK OFS & Tr with notes confusing him with the deserter R Dawson of the KLH.

Damant's Horse supplementary roll WO100/244p86 lists no number Corporal J W Dawson as initially being entitled to the SA01 and SA02 clasps to his QSA before his service as 214 KLH, in the KTG and ORC Police was added to entitle him to the KSA. Again there is a date of 19 March 1907 when this was resolved.

His KSA entry is on WO100/360p114. This gives his service dates as KLH 23 Oct 99 to 6 Jun 00 and in DH between 19 Nov 00 and 13 Feb 02.

A note says no trace was found in the Orange River Colony Police. He would have had time to serve there too but I cannot see him on the rolls.
