Yes, three of his brothers went to America and I've found details of their passages back and forth and details on the American Censuses but Joseph is a bit of a mystery still (but then that's part of the fun!).

Any idea where in Cumbria he was born? The county now called Cumbria. was then Cumberland, Westmorland, Furness (in Lancashire), and also part of Lancashire proper.

Hi Berenice,
He was born in Cleator (near Whitehaven) . The family had a farm there. I've managed to trace the history of all his siblings, parents and Grandparents but there was a gap for Joseph which I think I've now discovered why!
