my interest is in finding information on my grandfathers military record, he was a private in the 1st battalion scots guards and was recorded in the 1901 census as a house guest in bromley, kent recording his age and rank. I have a lot of information about his personal history but I am having no success in finding anything about his military record. older family members recall mention of his time in serving in south Africa.
I am a novice at researching anything concerning military history or ancestry and would appreciate any help as my efforts to date have proved bewildering.

1691 Private James Budsworth served twice in South Africa during the Anglo Boer War, from the 21st of October 1899 to the 23rd of July 1900 and again from the 15th of April 1902 until the 4th of October that same year, his papers have survived in WO97.
