Subject: Mafeking Convent
Date posted: 31st March 2003
I have recently been given a photo of the convent at Mafeking, showing some nuns and my great uncle (Dr. John B. Christopherson). He wrote on the back:
"The convent Mafeking showing effects of a 100 lb bombshell Sister Mary Patricia (acting) Mother superior Mother Mary Magorie(?) Postulants not there during siege."
There are two male figures besides my gt uncle and four female.

Has anyone anything to add to this? I'd like to learn more. Dr. Christopherson was British.

The Natal Branch of the SA Military History Society has advertised the book referred to in the scan below. It is "The Story of the Imperial Yeomanry Hospital at Deelfontein".

A most interesting organisation, quite frankly, it's mere existence, for me, at least confirms everything that was bad about the Imperial Yeomanry from it's inception.

I have prepared a roll of the members of the National Fire Brigades' Union Contingent to South Africa (summarising what I can find out about each one of them) and I'd be happy to furnish it to anyone who would like a copy.

Hi Peter,

I am attempting to put together a full roll of the National Fire Brigades' Union Contingent for the N.F.B.U. Tribute Medal page. So far, I have identified 42 of the 47 firemen, but am having difficulty with the final five. There are also a couple I'm not sure about (included in Stephen Durant's article in Medal News, June/July 2002), these being Superintendent Officer Norfolk and Orderly Walter Stone. These two men appear on the St John Ambulance medal roll and not on that for the IY Hospital.

I know it's a while ago, but if you are still happy to share the roll you have created, that would be immensely helpful.

This is what I have so far:

Imperial Yeomanry Hospital Staff (Deelfontein) –
Acting Sergeant-Major L. BUTTON (Haywards Heath; absent - still in South Africa)
Sergeant Samuel Alfred ALEXANDER (Ilford) (died, Woodford, Essex, 01/12/1901, after being invalided home with enteric)
