Being absent and then actually deserting certainly do not do much to advance any career!

Butlin1983 wrote: Thank you frank, Walter marlow is my 2nd great grandfather born in Rothwell Northamptonshire his parents Daniel and Sarah marlow. I have to say this sounds like my man as I have read he was quite a character also had a hint about him serving in the Royal field artillery Unfortunately I do not understand the number references that you used. How do I go about viewing this info or better still finding out more? Keen to find out what he did to be thrown out

Many thanks Paul

So to both sum up and answer your original question, 6924 Gunner Walter Marlow RFA did serve during the Anglo Boer War, on Home Service only, from the 28th of March 1900 until the 20th of July 1901, his parents were Daniel and Sarah Marlow as clearly shown on his papers and he was discharged for his misconduct as already stated.

Brilliant that's confirmed then, thank you. What role would the home service have not being allowed to leave the uk. Also is there any reason stated about the misconduct
