Along the same line, I've read that if a carving of a knight on his tomb has the legs crossed at the ankle, he'd gone on one crusade to Palestine; legs crossed at the knee, he'd gone on two crusades; and legs crossed at the thigh, he'd gone on three.
But I've also been told, in a church somewhere, that if the legs weren't crossed, he hadn't gone on a crusade; legs crossed at the ankle, he'd gone on a crusade, but hadn't returned; legs crossed at the knee, gone on a crusade, and had returned alive.
