WO329 confirms Morrison served with their 2nd Battalion and shows subsequent service with their 1st Battalion during the Great War, he was an Old Contemptible having seen active service from the 20th of September 1914 (members of his battalion had served at the Battle of Mons in August.) and I would have thought he would have been out on the sub continent until about 1909.

Thanks for the information you provided. I was hoping to be able to confirm my grandfathers whereabouts in South Africa by finding information as to where the regiment was stationed. Do you think it is possible he could have been transferred to the 1st battalion during his service at this time if there is no mention of the 2nd battalion having been there?

Thanks for your assistance. I know my grandfather served in India so was hoping to find out where his regiment was stationed during this time. Do you know what would be the best website to look for this information?

If you are talking about service actually in South Africa during the Anglo Boer War, then my answer would be no, you would expect to see him shown in WO100/166 with the battalion had he been.

That's a bit of a mystery as he told my father he was based in Mafikeng when he was there. Not sure where I go from here.

I have come across a Militia Attestation form which shows that when my grandfather initially enlisted it was for the 4th Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry and not the 2nd Battalion Royal Scots as I originally thought. He enlisted 30 September 1901 so it was quite close to the end of the war. Can you suggest any site which could help provide me with any further details on this Battalion?
