My fathers step brother fought in the second Boer war & did not return to the UK. Family folk lore says he met a nurse & married her & thus remained in South Africa. Does anybody know how I can go about tracing information about him? I believe he was in the Lancashire Fusiliers.

7316 Private John Henry Renshaw served in the 5th Lancashire Fusiliers during the Anglo Boer War, after enlisting on the 27th of June in Manchester, he was a twenty one year old porter from Oldham "Mumps" an area familiar to me!

I do not think this in my uncle as his family lived in Hulme/Chorlton on Medlock areas of Manchester.
Thank you for responding anyway.

That's interesting, simply because I do not think there is anyone else with that name in that regiment during the war.

Maybe the family memories are incorrect. My Uncle had a younger brother who also fought in the Boer War, his name is Alfred Renshaw. Do you know ifit? the Manchester regiment fought in South Africa? Maybe they fought with it?
Thank you for the help provided so far.

Oh yes, I can certainly say, with confidence, that the Manchester's fought in South Africa! :)
(The finest infantry in the British Empire!) :woohoo:
