My Great Great Uncle, Walter William Whitcroft ( No. 3916 Royal Horse Artillery "G" Battery) was killed on 21st October 1901 at Cornelius River. He was killed with a Sergeant Scott and they were both buried together near a farmhouse and a wooden cross erected with their numbers, rank, name and the inscription "Accidentally killed in action on Oct 21. R I P.
I would love to know if their graves are still there or if they have been moved and if so where to.

3916 Cpl. W.W.Whitcroft is shown on the Palmer casualty roll as Wounded at Cornelia River 21/10/01 after the explosion of a gun and died the same day. In case you are unaware of this, the medal roll for G Byt, RHA shows your GGU as being entitled to clasps Relief of Kimberley, Paardeburg, Dreifontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill and South Africa 1901. There is also a tick in the column for the clasp Laings Nek; this latter is most unlikely, really. If you wish to see an account of what G Bty RHA did, you may care to look in Stirling's "Our Regiments in South Africa" - which is on the Books section of this site.
I hope one of our membership is able to provide a photo of the grave site.
Regards
IL.
