Greetings.
I am new to the site but I do live on a farm which was occupied by the British soon after the advance from Orange River station.
That besides, a friend has shown me a medal received by a family member who was part of the Cradock Town Guard. He has no other information on him and I would like to know how to search this site for information. Any assistance/

Hi Ramah, Welcome to the forum. Do you have a name of the recipient?
The first port of call is the medal rolls to check on entitlement and to see if there was any further service with other units. You can do this via Ancestry.com or the National Archives in the UK. The second port of call would be the National Archives in RSA and check their digital records for information that might be relevant. A letter to the Great Fish River Museum or better still a visit might give you more social history - eg involvement in the Masons, school boards or sports clubs.

Hi david
He is Pte J.W. Adamson.

Strange thing is that Rob Southey got the medal from his mother assuming the medal belonged to his grandfather....Southey. He hadn't realized that the names were stamped on the side of the medal and, that no mention of anybody by name Adamson was known to the family. It is a bit of a mystery as to how the Southey family came to be holders of his medal. Southey being a very well known surname in the annals of E.Cape history.

Adamson is clearly shown on their roll in W0100/280 in respect of his medal, it might be worth going through WO126/145-163 carefully to see if his paper is still extant.

He is on the roll for the medal. Initials a little difficult to make out. Seems like he only served in the Cradock Town Guard.

There are potentially hundreds of Adamsons to check
