If I was starting out again on the QSA trail, my preference would be to start with QSA/QSA-KSA to the Infantry Battalions prominent in the Relief of Ladysmith; perhaps followed by the Cavalry and Infantry involved in the Relief of Kimberley and Paardeburg. These are generally reasonably inexpensive and available. Knowing what was necessarily undertaken to achieve those Reliefs, perhaps the Relief of Mafeking might be looked at. Medals with clasp Rof M (and usually bearing others associated with that clasp) are definitely more expensive. As are those for the early battles in Natal.
The above mentioned themes are, of course, only a personal opinion. It all comes down to your preference.
Whatever your decision, the medal you hold in your hand represents the activities of a man on active service for his Country and who was under fire. It means something.
Good luck with your quest
Regards
IL.

Doug,

My suggestion would be to read about the conflict and see if there are any events that particularly interest you and to collect medals that relate to that. There are many potential themes which makes the Boer War such an interesting area for collectors.

Let us know what you decide to do.

Kind regards
David
