I have been interested in ABW, since 2009. My grandfather fought in the ABW in The Natal Carbineers under Sir Redvers Buller. In the course of researching family history my interest in the ABW has gradually grown beyond the family history aspect. I recently had the opportunity to visit Spioen-kop, after reading up much about it. For the uninitiated..a piece of advice if you do not have a car with good ground clearance don't attempt it. On looking at a map of the area we also had never realised just how big an area the ABW covered, the views from up there are Panoramic! as I am sure all of you must already know

I have a special interest in the Natal Carbineers and the men who served in this regiment. A post on your grandfather and his career in the NC would be much appreciated.

It is disappointing to read about the state of the road to one of the most atmospheric of Boer War battlefields. Spioenkop's isolation has so far kept vandals out and it now seems that the battlefield has an additional protection against them.

Very nice images DJB, and well worth the visit... even if a person has no interest in the ABW aspect. Things are a lot greener in your photos than when we visited.
