CORPORAL Edward Wertheim was born in Graaf Reinet in Dec 1865, so he was 45 years old when captured at the battle of Pieters Hill as a member of the Fordsburg Commando and sent to Ceylon.
Although he and his family were originally Jewish he converted to Christanity later in life.
He died in September 1947 and is buried in Westpark cemetary in Johannesburg
