Hi, My Grandad as a young lad fought in the Boer War, was captured and carted off to St Helena. I reckon he was sixteen / seventeen years of age at the time. I am looking for info on time he spent on St Helena. Apparently the wife of the British Army Officer gave my Grandfather a document declaring him a "member of the British Empire", or something to that effect. This document along with a picture of him and fellow young mates standing round a man-made wooden wheelbarrow is in my son's possession.
Recently, at auction in Jo'burg, was sold a trick-opening, wooden heart-shaped box inscribed with my Grandfather's name. This box along with a bone ring and necklace was apparently given to his sister (inscribed on the box as well).
I would be delighted if fellow forum members could throw more light on the above.

Hi Henk, I am blessed with the same name/s as that of my Grandfather - Frederick Albert Velleman. He was born 26.09.1883 and died 21.07.1929 - buried in Potchefstroom. Trust this info helps. Regards Fred

Hi Fred
Unusual case!
Your grandfather was sent to St Helena as PoW No 2507 Fred Albert Willeman, prisoner at Paardeberg with Cronje's surrender.
He was awarded an ABO medal under his real names. You can contact Dewald Nel   [email protected]  for a copy of his medal application form

Hi Henk
Thanks for this information that, even if my Dad were still with us today, I'm sure he was not aware of, for surely he would have passed details on to me.
I certainly will be in touch with Dewald Nel to progress this further.
Thanks again
Regards

Fred
